Ocular zinc concentration.

چکیده
Human and rabbit ocular tissues contain high concentrations of zinc. In descending order in human globes, the metal concentration appears to be: retina-choroid, ciliary body, iris, optic nerve, sclera, cornea, and lens. Diamox does not alter the concentration of ocular zinc. In preliminary studies dithizone, a known zinc chelator, does not appear to alter ocular zinc concentration as well. The role of this metal in ocular tissue requires further clarification.

Histochemical localization of zinc and copper in rat ocular tissues.
Zinc and copper were histochemically localized in rat ocular tissues. Zinc was demonstrated by the dithizone method, and copper by the rubeanic acid and rhodanine methods. The retinal photoreceptor's outer segment showed the presence of zinc, but no zinc reaction was seen in other parts of the retina or other ocular tissues, even in rats fed excess zinc. It seems that photoreceptor cells contai...

Regulation of zinc uptake in roots of Arabidopsis thaliana has recently been modeled by a system of ordinary differential equations based on the uptake of zinc, expression of a transporter protein and the interaction between an activator and inhibitor. For certain parameter choices the steady state of this model becomes unstable upon variation in the external zinc concentration. Numerical resul...
متن کاملOcular histopathology of acrodermatitis enteropathica.
Acrodermatitis enteropathica is the clinical expression of congenital zinc deficiency and is now treated with supplemental zinc. This report details the ocular histopathology of a child who died before efficacious treatment was available. The findings include corneal epithelial thinning and loss of polarity, anterior corneal scarring and loss of Bowman's membrane, cataract formation, ciliary bo...
متن کاملExperience-dependent regulation of the zincergic innervation of visual cortex in adult monkeys.
Zinc is packaged in, and released from, a subset of glutamatergic synapses in the mammalian telencephalon where it has been shown to act as a potent neuromodulator. In order to establish the functional role for zincergic neurons in visual cortical function and plasticity we have compared the topographic distribution of zincergic terminals in the primary visual cortex (V1) of normal adult vervet...
متن کاملDecreased Serum Zinc Levels in Patients with Senile Cataract
Introduction: Age related cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world today and cataract extraction is the most often performed surgery. If a practical large scale intervention could slow the onset of cataract by ten years, the need for cataract surgery would be reduced by 45%. The causes of cataract are multiple, with nutrition playing a definite role. The usually high concentratio...
